“I think everybody that’s in government, everybody that’s running for office, is completely incompetent and can’t change anything.  I think anybody who has a chance at doing anything will never get elected.  I’d like the government to do as little as possible.  I’d like them to close up most of it and go home.  They should all get real jobs.  They should cut taxes and leave everyone alone and let businesses do what they do.”
(Terry Carmen, 55, of Syracuse, owner of CNY Support, unaffiliated with a political party)

“Well,  we need to keep the schools open.  In the city they’re closing schools, couple of them this year.  As far as health care, I’m not sure if I’m really understanding what Obama’s trying to do.”
(Mimi Patterson, 37, of Syracuse, nurse, Democrat)

“Unemployment – all the problems he had made and not fulfilled.  I can’t stand when someone gets on TV and just lies right to your face.  We need someone in there who can get a decent a healthcare program in.  The Obama healthcare has affected me as well as other people and it’s going to go cost a lot of money and we don’t need that.”
(Edward Stanton, 78, of Jamesville, retired,  Republican)

“One of the main things I almost always focus on are environmental issues, to tell you the truth.  I mean there are other issues like economics, but environmental is what I really focus on.  Just promote policies and legislation that protects environmental quality and integrity and protects people’s health and makes the world a better place to live in.”
(George Spak, 59, of Syracuse, organic certification inspector for northern New York, unaffiliated with a political party)

“Stop spending money.  You know, stop raising taxes.  Our federal government is just overstepping its designed purpose in a plethora of ways.  Social programs have created an entitlement culture that has to be reversed.”
(Dan D’Uva, 27, of Syracuse, announcer for the Syracuse Crunch, Republican)

(Chet Davis is a senior majoring in broadcast journalism and political science.)
