$ for Sheriff: Toby Shelley

For the fundraising race, challenger Toby Shelley of the Working Families Party is far behind incumbent Kevin Walsh for Onondaga County sheriff.

Shelley’s campaign had $2,487 on hand, according to the New York State Board of Election’s  database, as of Sept. 30. Walsh, a Republican, had $71,829 in his campaign account. The third candidate, Democrat Joe Price, had $657 on hand.

Walsh is the 16-year incumbent sheriff. Shelley and Price are deputies. Shelley lost to Price in a Democratic primary on Sept. 14. But shortly after that win, Price lost the party’s support after admitting to writing three offensive comments on The Post-Standard’s website.

Here’s an overview of Shelley’s campaign finances, according to the New York State Board of Elections:

  • As of Sept. 30, Shelley had raised $26,907 for his campaign.
    Almost all — 94 percent — of Shelley’s campaign money has come from individuals.  That amount is $25,292.
  • The remaining 6 percent — or $1,615 — comes from political action committees or PACs. PACs are organizations that spend money to re-elect or defeat a candidate or on issues.
  • The Iron Workers Local 60 in Syracuse is Shelley’s largest donor at $500.

While still looking for funding, the members of Shelley’s staff acknowledge they’re not anticipating much more fundraising success.

“We’re out of time,” said Wendy Colucci, Shelley’s deputy campaign manager. “There’s not going to be any big campaign fundraisers before Election Day.”
