On Nov. 20, Sandra Schepp won her bid for election with 94,735 votes, according to unofficial results from the Onondaga County Board of Elections.

Republican  Sandy Schepp is laying claim to victory in the race for Onondaga County Clerk.

At 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, with all 427 precincts reporting Schepp had 87,994 votes — or 51 percent — to 83,442 votes — or 49 percent  for Democrat Gary Morris, according to unofficial results from the Onondaga County Board of Election’s  OnVote 2012 website.

“This has been a great race. It’s been a wonderful time,” she said at the GOP’s gathering at the  Double Tree Hotel in Carrier Circle after her win was announced. “I can’t express my gratitude.”

The clerk’s position was left vacant for the first time in 16 years after Republican Ann Ciarpelli retired from the office in May, five months short of the end of her fourth four-year term. The county clerk is responsible for handling  public documents relating to business, property, ownership and civil and criminal cases.

Schepp ran a campaign that emphasized her experience as a small businessperson with ties to local government. She is the manager of Juno’s glass in Auburn and has served on the Manlius town council for more than a dozen years. That, Schepp said, would help her work well with local government as county clerk.

In the weeks leading up to the election, Schepp led an aggressive campaign that included going door-to-door and speaking with residents, handing out flyers and making appearances at community events. On Tuesday, before the election, Schepp and  other Republican candidates waved signs at passing motorists on Genesse Street in a final effort to capture votes.

With more than 20 years of business experience, Tom Dadey, chairman of the Onondaga County Republican Committee, said Schepp has the know-how to manage the $4 million budget tied to the county clerk’s office.

“It’ll be a breath of fresh air to the county clerk’s office,” Dadey said.

At the Tuesday night GOP celebration at Carrier Circle, Schepp, dressed in a red dress suit, waited for the results of her race. After acknowledging her win onstage, Schepp looked to the future and said she’s looking forward to helping modernize the county clerk’s office.

“ We’ll roll up our sleeves,” said Schepp. “We’ll get to work. We’ll take that office into the 21st century.”
