For the 2013 election, Barbara Humphrey is running as the Green Party candidate for one of three slots as Education Commissioner.

Biography

Occupation – Research Development Coordinator at Upstate Medical University, where she assists investigators and identifies funding for their research.

Education — B.A. SUNY Albany, history education, 1969

Family — Two children and a granddaughter, Makayla

Issues — Humphrey wants to advocate at the state level for Syracuse’s authority to implement a one percent commuter tax that could raise additional revenue for the City of Syracuse, and for the city to share a percentage of that with the school district, according to her website.

She also wants to increase students’ right to a quality public education with adequate resources in a safe, enriching environment.

She also said she wants educators’ to have the right to determine the content of curricula and how it is taught, and not be subjected to evaluations and consequences based on high-stake test scores.

Community Involvement — Worked for non-profits such as Hospice of CNY and is director of the Westcott Community Center. Served on boards and commissions at Northeast and Southwest Community Centers, the YMCA, the Fair Housing Council of CNY, the City/County Youth Board, the Community Development Advisory Committee, ReconsiDer, PEACE, Inc., Syracuse Community Choir and Child Care Solutions, according to her website. She currently sits on the boards of Westcott Neighborhood Association and the Syracuse Center for Peace and Social Justice. Humphrey helped launch the Westcott Street Cultural Fair in 1992.
