With the holiday travel season picking up speed, Hancock International Airport is telling travelers to pay attention to what they try to bring on the plane.
“Be aware of what you can and can’t get through the security screening,” said Rory McMahon, airport commissioner for Hancock International. “And the things you can’t, you should refrain from even bringing them.”
Hancock International Airport does not have the controversial full-body scanners that has prompted some passengers to object to what they see as invasions of privacy. But the airport’s security staff are doing extensive searches.
Officials are also advising passengers to follow what’s called “the 3-1-1 rule” for carry-on liquids and gels. Passengers cannot carry on bottles larger than 3.4 ounces. Bottles smaller than that must be placed in a clear zip-lock bag.
The airport is also advising passengers to follow these rules when going through security lines:
- Have your ID out.
- Take off coats, shoes and belts.
- Have any electronic devices and bags carrying the small amounts of liguid out and ready for inspection.
“People get frustrated when waiting in security lines,” said McMahon, the airport commissioner. “But if they follow those rules then they can get through the lines faster.”
