“Healthcare for the elderly — seniors — because we’re all going to get old someday and we’re going to be in their shoes, so hopefully we’ll set it up right so we’re all taken care of when we get to their age. Property taxes. We were having this discussion at work today. I know a gentleman who’s paying $3,600 a year for property taxes and he lives in Onondaga County and he doesn’t have any children so these are school taxes. I’d like to see something done with the taxes where if you don’t have children that are in school or if you’re a senior then you get a tax break.”

(Tina Posloski, 41 of Oneida, resource manager for the Syracuse Army Recruiting Battalion, Democrat)

“I like Joe Nicoletti because to me it seems he wants to get Syracuse out of this slump it seems to have been in the past few several years or so. He wants to promote the city, get more arts, more involvement of community people such as officers in the city itself. I know healthcare’s the big issue right now but I’m not as into it as some people are. Job growth is more important to me right now.”

(Michael Isgar, 29, of Syracuse, merchandise buyer at H&M clothing store, Democrat)

“Healthcare. I think it’s an important thing that everyone in the country be able to take care of the health of their family and not just if they have a job and their employers are willing to do it. I also work in healthcare so I’ve seen way too many people not be able to afford what they need because they are drowning in debt for having a stroke or some unforeseen medical incident.”

(Jodi Bova, 29 of North Syracuse, audiologist at Oviatt Hearing and Balance, Democrat)

“Anything against abortion. Healthcare would have to be something not overboard like everyone gets everything. It has to be fair. I’m not sure how it’ll affect taxes, if it’ll hike everybody’s or if they’re just going to give free healthcare to everybody who can’t afford it and then those that can afford it will have to pay it off. I like things to be fair, like if everyone was to be taxed 10 percent of their income, that’d be fair.”

(Adam Irish, 20 of North Syracuse, student at Onondaga Community College studying to be a surgical technician, Republican.)

“Healthcare. I’d been unemployed for a year with no health insurance after I shattered my heel two years ago and was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had no insurance, couldn’t go back to the doctors. So I’m just a little annoyed with everybody right now. I was $40 over the limit to be able to get any assistance. It’s a big deal. I have my issues with the president but I like Joe Nicoletti — he’s an Italian who wants to get back into politics. He’s been out of it for so long.”

(Bernadette Maher of Lafayette, mother of four and grandmother of five, independent)

(Julia Terruso is a junior majoring in newspaper journalism and political science.)
