For campaign dollars, Republican presidential candidate John McCain enjoys something in the greater Syracuse area that he doesn’t most other places: A lead over Democratic candidate Barack Obama in donations from individuals.

The Center for Responsive Politics, in Washington, D.C.,  is a non-partisan analyst  of campaign finance. The Center reports that donors in the Syracuse area have shelled out almost $120,000 to Senator McCain’s campaign. That’s more than $5,000 over what the Center reports contributors from this area have given to Senator Obama’s campaign.

Overall, the biggest donors to McCain’s campaign in Onondaga County are business owners, retirees, and professionals like doctors and lawyers.

Some key findings on McCain’s local fundraising, from the Center for Responsive Politics:

  •  30 percent of McCain’s donations — or more than $26,000 — came from business owners in Onondaga County.
  •     More than 27 percent — or $23,850 comes from retirees in Onondaga County. Nationwide, they are McCain’s biggest contributors — donating over $30 million to his campaign.
  •     More than 20 percent — or $18,000 — came from professionals such as local doctors, lawyers, and corporate officers.

The election is Nov. 4th.
