Joy Returns as Common Councilor at-Large

Democrat Kathleen Joy is celebrating her re-election to the Syracuse Common Council.

She was second in the unofficial vote totals behind fellow Democrat Bill Ryan — but that still puts her back in City Hall as a councilor-at-large. She’s okay with that.

“I’m winning. It doesn’t really matter between Bill Ryan and I. We’ve worked together, we’ve campaigned together. As long as I get in the top two, that’s all I’m worried about.” [Joy]

Two of the at-large seats were up for election. Joy and Ryan were the incumbents seeking re-election. With 100 percent of the vote counted Tuesday night, according to News10Now, the unofficial counts were Joy with 12,877 votes (35 percent); Ryan with 15,672 votes (42 percent); Republican Bill Harper with 5,956 votes (16 percent); Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins with 1,579 votes (4 percent) and Conservative Bob Teachout with 974 votes (3 percent).

Diane Dwire is the chairwoman for the Democratic Party. Dwire says she was glad to catch up with Joy at the end of her campaign.

“I’m very pleased to see it. I think it was a cute thing. She came and she said, ‘I have enough Kathleen Joy bars, I can’t eat any more! Her and Bill Ryan have a substantial lead and they will prevail.” [Dwire]

Official results will be certified later in the week. To recap, Democrats Bill Ryan and Kathleen Joy have been re-elected in the race for Syracuse Common Councilor at-Large.
