In the months leading to the Fall 2014 election, Hunter insisted that he would try and force a GOP primary in the 24th Congressional District, but would abandon his efforts to do so. For the fall 2013 election, Ian Hunter sought the Republican ballot line for mayor. But his petition signatures from voters were challenged by the Republican Party, which would not endorse him as the party’s candidate. He lost the mayoral race to Democratic incumbent Stephanie Miner.

Occupation — Project manager for Last Chance Recycling, a recycling company in DeWitt.

Family — Wife, Joy; eight children, ranging in age from 48 to 18; nine grandchildren.
Issues — Hunter wants to give students the choice to attend better schools. Parents would get a government voucher of about $2,500 so that they could homeschool their children or send them to a private school.
He also wants to privatize garbage pick-up and waste from the city. He cites his background in the recycling business as giving him insight into the city’s needs. By privatizing trash collection, Hunter calculates, the city could save about $300 a household.
Hunter wants to persuade Time Warner Cable to put together an a la carte service, where people could simply pick and pay for whatever channels they want.
Past Political Offices: Hunter has never held a public office. He tried to run for mayor as a Republican in 2001. He unsuccessfully ran for the Onondaga County Legislature 18 years ago and ran for the Syracuse Common Council in the 1970s.
