Biography

*On Nov. 6, Barack Obama won his bid for re-election, reaching 270 Electoral College votes before his opponents. In Central New York, Mitt Romney received 72,807 votes, according to the Onondaga County Board of Elections’ website.

Occupation:  Romney worked for the management consulting firm Bain & Company before founding the investment firm Bain Capital in 1984. In 1994, he ran for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts but lost to incumbent Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.)

In 1999, Romney took over as president of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. He helped save the 2002 Winter Olympics from financial and ethical woes, and ran what was considered a successful Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002.

He was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2003 and ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, but lost to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

He was president and chairman of American Motors Corporation from 1954 to 1962, and served as the Governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969. From 1969 to 1973, George Romney served as the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

Governor of Massachusetts, 2003-2007

As Governor of Massachusetts, Romney instituted a statewide health care overhaul, which required every resident of Massachusetts to have health insurance. This legislation, known by many as “Romneycare,” served as a model for President Barack Obama’s national health care plan.

While Governor, Romney balanced the budget every year of his administration, closing a budget gap of more than $2 billion inherited when he took office.
